Varahadeva with Bhu Devi Deity (Handcrafted)
Big, handcrafted Deity made of Brass (17.5cm). It has been produced in South India. This is Varahadeva together with his wife Bhu-Devi.
According to Vaishnava Philosophie, Varaha is the third avatar of Lord Vishnu in the form of boar. Lord Varaha appears to defeat Hiranyaksha, a demon who had taken the Earth (prthivi) to the bottom of huge ocean. The fight in between Lord Varaha and Hiranyaksha took place for thousands of years and Lord Varaha won the fight. Lord Varaha carried out the Earth from ocean between his tusks and restored it to its place in the universe. He then married goddess Prithvi (Bhudevi) in this avatar. Lord Varaha is worshipped as either purely animal or as anthropomorphic who have a boar’s head on a man’s body. On latter he has four arms, among which two hold the wheel and conch-shell while the other two hold a mace, sword or lotus or make a sign of blessing (like in this version). This Avatar of lord Vishnu is the symbolism of rebirth of the Earth from a pralaya (deluge) and organization of a new kalpa (cosmic cycle).
