The Siva Purana contains descriptions, sermons and dissertations on Sivaﾒs divinity, recounts his emblems, attributes, exploits and incarnations, narrates legends on the origin and importance of his linga image and the merits of installing and consecrating it.
It consists of seven Samhitas. The extantc has been reduced from the previous 12 Samhitas to the present seven by Vyasa himself. They are a) Vidyeswara (2000 slokas); b) Rudra (10,500); c) Satarudra (2180); d) Kotirudra (2240); e) Uma (1840); f) Kailasa (1240); g) Vayaviya (4000). The initial seven chapters on the Siva Purana Mahatmyam are taken from the Skanda Purana.
